William Shakespeares The Merchant of Venice Introduction The three versions of the Merchant of Venice which I have watched are: 1. Channel 4 television version for their Schools Broadcasting Programmes 2. Trevor Nunns version 3. National Theatre Company version directed by Jonathan Miller and starring Laurence Olivier as Shylock Act IV scene 1 is an intense scene in the play where we see many of the plays main themes such as justice and mercy, money and status, revenge, loyalty, love and prejudice and tolerance. Shakespeare presents a harsh character in Shylock the Jew, but the fact that he also gives him the chance to speak more than any other European playwright†¦show more content†¦This would suggest that Shakespeare is using Shylock as more than a symbol of Jewishness. In this piece of coursework I will be examining mainly how sympathetic or unsympathetic the various versions seem to be and how each Director has succeeded in making the character of Shylock worthy of Shakespeares realism. Jews were traditionally viewed as outsiders and were not citizens. Christians as far back as the 11th century could not lend money without interest and many Jews earned a living from this profession as they could not join the artisan guilds. As they became their own debt collectors they soon became the target of resentment. A myth was born; with which Shakespeares audience would have been familiar, of ritual murder or blood libel that Jews would kill adult Christians. It is to this myth to which Shakespeare seems to allude in the pound of flesh incident in this scene. Shakespeare is original in showing us the extent to which Shylock is oppressed by Christians surrounding him and it is through this that Shakespeare succeeds in drawing out sympathy from his audience. Analysis of Act IV scene 1 In the text of Act IV scene 1 before we meet Shylock he is described as a stony adversary, an inhuman wretch, incapable of pity, void and empty from any dram of mercy. One of the most famous threats was made on Martin Luther King Jr. was on January 30th, 1956. A bomb was thrown into Martin Luther King Jr. ’s house, fortunately nobody was seriously injured. Almost everywhere he went he was harassed. In 1964 he was harassed by a group of black Muslims, they threw stones at him in the streets. The ideals for this organization he got from Christianity and its effective methods came from Gandhi. In these years, he led a big protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that grabbed the attention of the entire world, which gave what he called a union of sense of right and wrong. Martin Luther King Jr. ’s Impact Martin Luther King impacted everyone through a nonviolent protest. He showed love, faith, determination and fearless representation. My personal opinion I felt that when he started speaking out against the war in Vietnam his life was in serious danger. This theory allows the leader to change their leadership style based on the subordinates’ personality. Martin Luther King wanted people to think differently. I believe that because he wanted people to think differently, helped him remove obstacles for subordinates. It challenged people to make a difference. With situational leadership, it is up to the leader to change his style, not the follower to adapt to the leader’s style. His perception of his self and other factors such as stress and mood will also change the leaders’ behavior in different situations. I believe Martin Luther King follows the situational approach of leadership because he has the ability to adapt to the variety of followers and environments as well as opposing attitudes. I also believe he was mostly using the coaching style. He was a very supportive person, but at the same time he directed people with his speeches on the direction people needed to go. When looking at the styles approach, I believe he was really relationship oriented. To me this means that he had a lot of concern for the people. When seeing the skills model, motivation was one of the keys to his individual attribute. He had the dream that inspired everybody. He was great at adapting to different situations when doing his speeches. He got the vibe from the audiences and adapted from them. He observed his followers and grabbed their attention by relating to the situation at hand, Servant Leadership Defined Servant leadership stresses the importance of the role a leader plays as the factor of the resources of a organization, and teaches leaders to serve others while still achieving the goals that are set. A servant leader is a servant first, who has responsibility to be in the world, so he contributes to the well-being of people and the community. A servant leader looks to the desires of the people and asks his self how he can help them to solve problems and promote personal development. He puts his main focus on people, because only content and motivated people are able to reach their targets and to achieve the set expectations. Martin Luther King followed the servant leadership theory because he was a servant first who contributed to the well-being of people and the community. He had the ability to be inspired and also inspire his followers. To me Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most inspirational and influential leaders in recent history. He actually preached and practiced servant-leadership. During a time when fear and segregation took over his country, he picked forgiveness and compromise instead of getting revenge and retaliating. He was a representative of positive change, trying to heal a country that was in a bad situation and had people that showed prejudice, hatred, and discrimination. Martin Luther King took on a different approach than what others would do, instead of hating the people who disliked him; he chose to love them instead. He insisted Americans to stop judging and start understanding each other. Like most great leaders, he used his words to empower, heal, and reunite people. According to Chui, Newlands and Plessis (2015), the upgraded local skills will also help the manufacturers achieve the goals. Here, the leadership styles will determine the way the manufacturing industry will flourish in the future. Cambodia has shown huge improvement in the economy based on the industrial sector. Here the major donators are the agricultural sector and the manufacturing sector. The agricultural sector of Cambodia has low scope for effective project management. For this reason, the manufacturing industry will get all the attention from effective project management. This will incorporate planning, tracking, and communication. According to Thet and Penh (2013), planning includes building schedules, assigning resources, and budget creation. The communication involves communicating the tasks of the production in the manufacturing sector. Publishing key milestones will help the process. The tracking will help the organizations operating in the manufacturing industry in Cambodia. Definitions: Project Manager: The project managers make and develop project goals which are chased by the team members in order to achieve the organizational goals. The project managers also create strategies which are there to help the team members in doing so. Personal Attribute: Personal attributes of a project manager are the traits of the person which make the manager a sustaining one. The best attributes a project manager holds are, having a foresight, organized, leading traits, good in communication, pragmatic, and empathetic. Manufacturing Industry: The manufacturing industry of an economy incorporates those entities which are responsible for creating a brand new product using physical, chemical, mechanical transformative materials as resources. Project Success: In project success, one measures a project with respect to some parameters like budget, scope, quality, time limit, and others.
